Light Housekeeping

Keeping the home clean, tidy, and safe to move around in — the everyday upkeep that gets harder to manage but makes all the difference to comfort and independence.

What is light housekeeping?

A Clean, Safe, Comfortable Home

Light housekeeping is the routine upkeep that keeps a home pleasant to live in and safe to move around — tidying, laundry, dishes, changing bedding, wiping down surfaces, and clearing the clutter and spills that turn into trip hazards.

It's deliberately different from a deep-clean service. The focus is on maintaining the home during a regular care visit, and on the safety side of tidiness: clear walkways, dry floors, fresh linens, and a kitchen that's usable rather than overwhelming.

What's included

The Everyday Upkeep, Handled

Tasks are agreed in advance and fitted around the rest of the visit — pick what helps most and leave the rest alone.

Tidying & Dusting

General tidying of living areas, dusting surfaces, and putting things back where they belong so the home stays easy to navigate.

Dishes & Kitchen

Washing up or loading the dishwasher, wiping counters and the stovetop, and clearing out expired food from the fridge.

Laundry & Linens

Washing, drying, folding, and putting clothes away, plus changing and making the bed with fresh sheets.

Bathroom Refresh

Wiping down the sink, toilet, and tub, replacing towels, and keeping the floor dry — the room where slips most often happen.

Fall-Hazard Checks

Clearing walkways, securing loose rugs and cords, mopping up spills, and flagging burnt-out bulbs or anything that looks unsafe.

Rubbish & Recycling

Emptying bins, taking rubbish and recycling out on collection day, and keeping bags from piling up by the door.

Scope of service

What "Light" Actually Means

Being clear up front avoids awkward conversations later. Here's where the line sits.

What we do

  • Tidying, dusting, and surface wiping in the rooms in use
  • Sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping floors
  • Laundry, bed changes, dishes, and bins
  • Clearing trip hazards and reporting safety concerns
  • Watering plants, collecting mail, small everyday errands

What we don't

  • Deep cleaning, carpet shampooing, or post-renovation clean-up
  • Climbing ladders, exterior windows, or working at height
  • Moving heavy furniture or lifting beyond safe limits
  • Home repairs, yard work, snow clearing, or pest control
  • Handling hazardous waste or biohazard clean-up

If something falls outside our scope, we'll say so and can usually point you toward a local cleaning, handyman, or yard service that handles it properly.

Who it's for

Signs Housekeeping Help Would Make a Difference

  • Clutter is building up on floors, stairs, or in hallways
  • Laundry and dishes are piling up between visits
  • Bending, carrying, or reaching has become painful or unsafe
  • There's been a fall, or a near miss on a rug or cord
  • Housework has started to feel overwhelming rather than routine
  • Family are spending their visits cleaning instead of visiting

Housekeeping pairs naturally with other services. Most families combine it with personal care, meal preparation, or companionship in the same visit, so one familiar caregiver covers everything.

How it works

Getting Started Is Simple

From first call to first visit, most families are set up within a few days.

1

Free Consultation

Call or send a message. We'll listen to the situation and answer your questions — no pressure, no sales script.

2

Walk Through the Home

We visit to see the space, note any safety concerns, and understand how things are organised and preferred.

3

Agreed Task List

We write down exactly which tasks are included and how often, so nothing is assumed on either side.

4

Regular Visits

Visits begin and the list gets reviewed as needs change. Tell us any time if priorities shift.

Questions

Light Housekeeping FAQs

No. A cleaning company does periodic deep cleans of the whole property. Light housekeeping is routine upkeep carried out during a care visit by the same caregiver who may also be helping with meals, personal care, or companionship. Many families use both — a cleaner every few weeks, and us for the day-to-day.

We use the products and equipment already in the home, which keeps costs down and avoids introducing scents or chemicals that don't agree with someone. If anything runs low or a safer alternative would be better, we'll flag it rather than substituting on our own.

Completely. Caregivers don't reorganise, declutter, or throw anything away without being asked. Familiarity matters more than tidiness — being unable to find your own things is disorienting and undermines independence. If something looks like a genuine hazard, we raise it rather than acting unilaterally.

That depends on the visit length and what else is scheduled. We'll be straight with you during the assessment about what fits comfortably in the time, and we prioritise the tasks that matter most rather than rushing through a longer list badly.

Yes, though most people find it works best alongside another service. A visit that combines tidying with a meal and some company generally makes better use of the hours than housekeeping alone — but we're happy either way.
